MYCSW GRADEBOOK
ACCESSING GRADEBOOK
Teachers can access grade books from section pages.
Under Classes, choose the appropriate class/section.
Next, select Gradebook, which then appears in a new window.
Teachers can also access their grade books and assignments from My Day > Schedule & Performance. All available Gradebooks are listed along with an average of all the grades currently in each one.
NOTE: While students can't view a Gradebook, they can see posted grades from Student, Progress, and then selecting See grade detail under the Courses section.
SETTING UP A GRADEBOOK
Managers and teachers are able to set up gradebooks for individual sections or for all of their classes at once. Either way, gradebooks need to be setup before teachers start using them because if they are not setup correctly the students' cumulative grade won't be calculated properly.
In addition to setting up the calculation, teachers can also enable certain features to help customize the gradebook to meet their needs. Check out our documentation here when you're all set up and ready to work with assignment grades in a class gradebook.
Open the appropriate gradebook and select Edit Setup.
Select the Set By value for Gradebook calculation. You can set the calculation method to be based on the entire Year or by each Marking Period or term individually. You may want to setup the terms separately if you include different assignment types each term. Note: Gradebooks must be set up per Year in order to display a Year Cumulative.
Select Edit next to the term or year.
Check the Assignment Types which you want to include in the cumulative grade.
Select the Calculation Method from the dropdown. Information on these is listed in the dropdown below. If Percentages is selected, a tool tip appears and displays how the grades are calculated.Note: If you've selected either Total Points with Weight or Percentages, enter the weight for each assignment type in the Weight field.
Choose a Letter Grade Scale for each assignment type, if needed.
If you would like to drop the lowest n number of assignments, enter the number of assignments under Number to Drop which can be set per marking period or by year. In addition, when a student has two or more of the same low grades to drop, the higher point value is the one selected to be dropped. Note: This can be edited later on if you do not want the assignments to be dropped in the middle of the term.
Complete this process for all terms, if applicable.
When you're finished, select Save & Close.
GRADEBOOK CALCULATIONS
Here are descriptions and examples for each of the 3 gradebook calculation methods:
Total Points: In this calculation method, the students' cumulative grade is based on the total points earned divided by the total points attempted. Select this option if the cumulative grade is based on straight points, and you do not take into account the type of assignment when calculating the grade.
Formula sum (assignment grade * assignment factor) / sum(maximum points * factor) = Total cumulative grade
2. Total Points with Weight: In this calculation method, the students' cumulative grade is based on the total points a student earned, divided by the total points attempted within each assignment type. The assignment type grades are then averaged together based on their weights. Select this option if the cumulative grade is based on something like 30% homework, 40% quizzes, and 30% exams, but each assignment within those categories is worth varying points.
Formula: For each assignment type: sum(assignment grade * assignment factor) / sum(maximum points * factor) = Assignment type gradeThen: sum(assignment type grade * weight) / sum(weight) * 100 = Total cumulative grade
3. Percentages: The assignments are averaged together within each assignment category, the average is used to calculate the cumulative grade based on the weights the teacher has entered. Select this option if the cumulative grade is based on something like 30% homework, 40% quizzes, and 30% exams, but each assignment within those categories count equally.
FormulaFor each assignment type: sum(assignment grade / maximum points * assignment factor) / sum(factor) = Assignment type gradeThen: sum(assignment type grade * weight) / sum(weight) * 100 = Total cumulative grade
